Connecting
to and transferring files to/from your site with WS_FTP.
- Open WS_FTP
- the first screen should look like this. If not, click
the "Connect" button in the lower left-hand
corner of your screen.

- For "Profile Name," type either the name of your company or whatever
you would like to have WS_FTP refer to your site as.
- For "Host Name/Address," you can either type your domain
name or the IP address of the server (66.186.176.216).
- Leave "Host Type" set to Automatic detect.
- "User ID" should be the same User ID you use to login to
the server.
- "Password" should also be the same password you use to
login to the server.
- Leave "Account" and "Comment" blank, put a check in "Save
Pwd" if you would like to save your password, and then click
"Apply" and "OK."
- The connection screen should disappear and be replaced
by this screen:

- This is the
main screen where all file transfers take place. The
window on your left is the local window, where you can
see the files on your hard drive. The window on your
right is the remote window, where you can see the files
currently on the server.
- The first thing
you'll need to do is double-click the green arrow at
the top of the remote window two times to move up two
directory levels. Next, double-click on the folder
titled "web" to
enter the folder where your website is stored. To make
sure that you automatically enter this directory every time
you connect, you can click on the "Options" button at the
bottom of the screen and click the button that says "Save
current directories as Connection Directories," and
then click "OK."
- To upload
files to your server, you simply highlight the files
or folders in the local window that you want to transfer,
and then click the right-pointing arrow in the middle
of the screen. Conversely, to download files from the
server, you highlight files in the remote window and
click the left-pointing arrow.
- A word of warning:
WS_FTP does NOT confirm if a file already exists on the
server (or on your hard drive) before you transfer it.
Be absolutely positive that you are uploading/downloading
the correct versions of said files/folders BEFORE you click
the arrows.
- To delete files
in WS_FTP, simply right-click on the files and select
delete OR highlight them and hit the delete button. To
delete entire folders, you must first enter the folder
(and every one of the sub-folders) and delete all the
files contained within.
- To
move files from one directory to another, highlight the
files you want to move and click the "ChgDir" button. A
dialog box will appear asking you the name of the folder
you wish to transfer the files to. If you want to move
the files up one level (say, from the images folder to
the root folder) type ../ in the dialog box and click
"OK."
- To create a
new folder in WS_FTP, click the "MkDir" button and enter
the name of the new folder.
- Note: WS_FTP
has an unfortunate tendency to freeze after an operation
has been completed. To unfreeze the program, the easiest
way is to click "Close" and then "Cancel" repeatedly. If
this does not work, click "Exit" and then "Cancel."
